Recognized maternity care in Richmond

A healthy baby starts with a healthy pregnancy and birth. That is why Johnston-Willis Hospital offers comprehensive maternity and childbirth services with customized prenatal, labor and delivery, newborn and ongoing postpartum care.

Johnston-Willis has been named a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. This designation means our birthing center is recognized for providing cost-efficient, high-quality maternity care to expectant parents in central Virginia.

For more information about our labor and delivery services, please call (804) 320-3627. To register for a childbirth class or hospital tour, please visit our classes and events page.

Johnston-Willis has cared for generations of Chesterfield County families. Founded in 1909, our childbirth center delivers more than 1,500 babies annually. Our maternity caregivers—including obstetricians, gynecologists, anesthesiologists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists and nurse practitioners—work together to ensure your pregnancy and delivery go smoothly. This collaborative approach to care helps ensure the best possible outcomes for you and your baby.

Prenatal care

From routine pregnancy appointments to maternal-fetal medicine services, our experienced OB/GYNs and perinatologists provide superior prenatal care to help you have a healthy pregnancy.

Maternity classes and hospital tours

As part of our prenatal care services, we offer a wide range of maternity classes to help you and your support person prepare for pregnancy, childbirth, parenting and beyond.

Knowing that being familiar with our birth center can help ease anxieties when the big day comes, we also provide free guided tours of our maternity unit.

Labor and delivery at our birth center

You know your body better than anyone and we trust your instincts. You choose how to manage labor and delivery, and we'll help you create your ideal birth plan.

We offer wireless fetal monitoring and low-intervention birth options, such as natural pain management techniques, and encourage immediate skin-to-skin contact for you and your infant. Additionally, we offer soaking tubs for hydrotherapy, and we welcome doula care. We are happy to connect you to a doula in Richmond.

Our highly trained team will be attending to your needs during your entire labor. We have the latest obstetric technology and resources, including on-site anesthesiologists and dedicated operating rooms nearby for unplanned or emergency C-sections.

Our large maternity suites include private bathrooms and sleeping arrangements for your partner or support person. There is no need to change rooms after your baby is born—you will recover and bond with your baby in the same space you gave birth.

With snacks and beverages available for you and your partner in our family kitchen—and spacious waiting areas nearby—your support team will feel right at home throughout your childbirth experience.

Care for newborns requiring extra attention

If needed, your baby has access to expert, compassionate care at Johnston-Willis, including:

  • Critical newborn care on-site: Our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides around-the-clock care for the tiniest and most critically ill infants.
  • Renowned treatment for neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS): Together with Chippenham Hospital in Richmond, we were the first in central Virginia to treat newborns with withdrawal symptoms caused by NAS. Our maternal addiction program offers respectful care and support to moms, infants and families affected by substance abuse.
  • Pediatric emergency care: If your baby requires emergency care, you can take comfort knowing we can provide pediatric emergency services right here where you gave birth.

Postpartum care

You will receive abundant support and encouragement after your baby is born, both during your time in the hospital after giving birth and once you have transitioned back home. Johnston-Willis has earned the Virginia Department of Health's "breastfeeding-friendly" designation for our efforts to promote and support breastfeeding among new mothers.

Our postpartum care services range from breastfeeding support and access to donor milk to newborn photography services and more. We want to ensure your post-delivery experience is as enjoyable and memorable as possible.
